It was time to separate the men from the boys in the final workout of the 2013 Crossfit Open. A grueling version of Fran with Thrusters and Chest-to-Bar pullups proved to be too much for some. One member conquered the chest to bar pullup for the first time. Here's Jennifer Floyd, in her own words, on the 13.5 Experience.

    Hey! Hey!

I entered into the world of Crossfit just over a year ago. Some friends of mine from  Crossfit OIB urged me to take the plunge.  Weeeeeeee!!!!

My family has always been very active in sports whether it be participating or spectating.  I grew up dancing , cheerleading, and playing softball.  I continued dancing competitively in college.  Once I graduated, that all went away.  I had no more sport responsibilities and no more competitions. BOO! Guess I’ll join a gym???

I learned how to run very well on a treadmill! Other than a few classes I might try, I was pretty much glued to that thing. For someone who has the energy I do mixed in with some A.D.D, the treadmill became very boring very fast.

After lots and lots of searching, I finally found my new home away from home…..Crossfit LKN!

One of my first foundation classes, I remember Haley telling us to come over and do a pull up…. “Ummmm,  HA!”  is what came out of my mouth….  I stood up on the box and grabbed onto the bar and with great success I FAILED!  She then introduced us to this giant rubber band! Holy Cow, this thing is pretty cool except for the fact I seem to only be great at getting myself tangled up in it.. Oh the joys of learning how to work that thing properly.  I am a blonde!

Soon after, I get introduced to the infamous THRUSTER! What The Heck??? This had to be the most awkward skill for me. You want me to squat with this bar in this funky rack position with my elbows pointed up in the air and then stand up and push it over my head??? Hmmmm…I tried to break this thing down into 5 different pieces it seems. Preston would always tell me to “just do it in one motion".. yeah umm ok……

One year later here comes 13.5! Once Dave Castro announced his teaser using the phrases  “blood bath” and “push through the pain”, I knew it had to be pull ups and thrusters . Of course it wasn’t only pull ups, but chest-to-bar pull ups! Something I’ve never even tried.

Two days before I was to attempt this workout, I went to the gym to work on my kip and technique for this chest to bar pull up. I tried a few or 50 with no success. I woke up Saturday morning repeating a phrase my college coach used to always say “ CAN’T NEVER COULD”…. It’s not that I can’t do a C2B pull up, It’s that I’ve YET to do one. My goal for 13.5: JUST ONE REP!!!! 15 thrusters and 1 C2B pull up… 3,2,1… go…. 4 minutes later…. 15 thrusters and zero C2B pull ups… oh well… I tried right? NO!

If I have to swing like a monkey I’m going to get this C2B. That being said, I played on the bar for a few minutes continuing my efforts. Christine walks over to me to give me a little pep talk.  She tells me to do what YOU do and go attack it… Just jump on the bar and go! OK sounds good! I get into attack mode, jump on the bar, and hit my very first chest to bar pullup!!

OUCH!!! I hit the bar so hard it shook the rig! So what now???

I just did the workout and missed every attempt.  I’ll just do it again. Right now!! I know I can get at least one rep! When I decided to go again, I didn’t realize I was going to be making the attempt at 13.5 alone! I couldn’t disappoint with all of my crossfit family surrounding me right? 3,2,1, go….. 15 thrusters in and I waited about 20 seconds to make my 1st attempt and I nailed it…. And again and again and again…At  8 reps in, I realized I had 90 seconds left to get 7 more! Heck Yeah! I got this!

I lost count and even tried for a 16th C2B…I hurried and squeezed in one more thruster! I was on the verge of tears as I couldn’t believe what had just happened.  I was so excited!!!  I was ready to do it for a 3rd time!!!  What an incredible experience! WOOHOO!

My Crossfit family is the secret ingredient to my success!  From my coaches to my fellow athletes, the positive energy and encouragement that everyone provides is amazing! What an awesome atmosphere we have here at Crossfit LKN!  Now, let’s go do some WERK!!!!

It was a tough decision to choose a Beast of the Month during the Open. Everyone who participated gave inspiring performances, but there were two members who had exceptional achievements in March. Greta Sherwood gave a jaw-dropping performance in 13.1 with her power snatches and Glenn Setzer got his very first muscle-up in 13.3. Way to go, beasts!

Here are the two beasts sharing their thoughts on Crossfit.

When did you start Crossfit and why?

A friend of mine suggested I try it out.  I have been athletic and I guess competitive (my husband reminds me) my entire life.  The classic “aerobic classes” weren’t challenging anymore and I had no interest in “self training myself” on how to do the proper weight lifting techniques.  Crossfit is a combination of both.  The trainers coach us on proper technique and I get to focus on results.  I joined Crossfit December of 2011, had to take 9 months off due to some physical concerns, came back Jan of 2012 and now the 11:30 class is part of my extended family.

What is your biggest accomplishment since you started Crossfit?

Double unders  which happened this month!  I finally took a friend’s advice (thanks Jamie) and began practicing before and after each WOD.  To my surprise I was able to knock out 40 in the open.  To be honest, each week of the open proved to be a huge accomplishment in itself.  I had never snatched 75# before and during 13.1 did it 20 times!  In 13.4 the clean & jerk weight was 95# (which I attempted for the first time 2 days before) and was able to knock out 24 during the competition.  Surprisingly, I exceeded my own expectations and isn’t that what we all hope to accomplish everyday whether in the gym or in life?

    Why do you love Crossfit?

It’s fun!  It is challenging, pushes your limits and gives you a sense of being accepted.  I feel like I belong in this box which is somewhat ironic because I am not your “typical” Crossfitter.  I don’t do Paleo, never had a recovery drink in my life, tend to indulge (a little too much at times) in life’s pleasures but at the end of the day feel like I belong.

Tell us something about you we don’t know about you. Make it good.

I am a competitive cheerleading judge (yes, the ones you see on ESPN).  I judge nationally, internationally and the Worlds Cheerleading Championship every year in Orlando.  Now you know why I jump and yell after snatching 75#.

When did you start Crossfit and why?

I started Crossfit in October of 2012 because I was bored with my workouts and was intrigued by the challenge.  Prior to starting, I found myself watching reruns of the 2012 Crossfit Games over and over, even if I had seen that particular episode before.  My workouts at that time consisted of working out at home doing a combination of running and P90X / Insanity workouts.  I had done those off and on for a couple of years and thought I was in decent shape.  That was quickly put into perspective when I tried Crossfit and saw the level of fitness at Crossfit LKN.   I was hooked immediately.

What is your biggest accomplishment since you started Crossfit?

No doubt it was getting thru the 13.3 workout and getting my first muscle up after 150 wall balls and 90 double unders.  I had been working on the progressions after class and had even tried a few times on the rings, but couldn't quite get up there.  The adrenaline rush of the open workouts definitely helped.  Getting thru 30 days of eating the Whole30 diet was a close second though.  That was hard!

    Why do you love Crossfit?

I love it for a lot of reasons, the fitness, the community, etc.  But my favorite thing about Crossfit is that no matter what sort of mood I'm in or what's happened during that day, it's the one hour a day where I completely forget about everything external.  My problems, thoughts, concerns do not exist when i'm there.  It's definitely my reset button.

Tell us something about you we don’t know about you. Make it good.

I once worked for the CIA. No badges, guns or vests though. The most exciting thing they issued me was a laptop.  I was hired to work with them out of college (information systems degree) and ended up working on a team that was fixing the Y2K bug while waiting for security clearance.  The clearance process took over a year and I took a job with another company before I got to work on anything that required clearance.

The funniest part of the whole experience was running into people that I hadn't seen in years and having them ask me, "What the **** did you do?".  Apparently the agents performing background checks were VERY thorough when interviewing people from your past and they don't necessarily tell them why they are asking questions.
